To fabricate a fabric roof to cover a Scottish quarry. The quarry was to provide Europe 's largest enclosed climbing facility and the Architects were looking for a design solution that allowed the maximum amount of natural daylight to penetrate.
Custom Covers worked with the Architects to refine the design the fabric panels, particularly the attachment detail to the existing steel trusses.
The roof was designed to have 7 large valley sheets ( 75mx 10m ) and 8 peak sheets (75m x 4m). These sheets used a high light transmission pvc developed for the horticultural industry.
The size of the roof sheets required careful production planning and once they were assembled they were loaded on to special steel pallet to allow transport to Scotland . This pallet enabled the roofs, each weighing 500 kg to be pulled straight into position, 30m above the ground.
The final building covers approximately 7000sqm and has five large fabric wall panels. It was completed in 2004 and has hosted international climbing competitions.
